How Custom Plastic Electrical Enclosures Compare for Keeping Outdoor Equipment Safe?

Metal enclosures have for a long time been an important part and parcel of homes and offices. This could be a purpose made a cabinet for switches, electrical components et al which is wired to the main supply of the house. None of the electrical paraphernalia is visible from the outside. Only the enclosure is. There are basically two types of enclosures available in the market, as on date. One is metallic and the other is made of plastic. The latter type has several sub-divisions in it.

Plastic enclosures have many advantages. First and foremost, they are very cost-effective. The metallic enclosures cost much more than these. In addition, the plastic enclosures are simpler to install. The metallic ones require far more effort to install them. They are also bulkier than the plastic counterparts. Another point in favor of plastic enclosures is that they provide protection from ultraviolet radiation. This aspect comes very handily in those places which have high temperatures. Plastic enclosures are mainly used for small junction circuits in the home or office. Cable holding in these is also a positive point since this material is more elastic in nature. It also enhances the rate of protection for the electrical circuitry inside the enclosure.

How else are plastic enclosures better?

In the outdoor installation, there are chances of rain and snow in certain places. Here, plastic enclosures are far better since these will not rust or get damaged due to the moisture in the air. There is a chance of the enclosure coming in contact with certain chemicals at times. Metallic enclosures may react to these and get spoilt. The electrical components inside them also may come to harm. Plastic enclosures will remain inert to chemical action. They will also provide effective cover for the electrical cabling and wiring inside it and will not short circuit in any way. However, the quality of plastic used for this purpose should be good. For instance, PVC material should not be used for making enclosures. This may prove harmful. The PVC can come in contact with UV radiations and this may lead to a high rate of emissions. Such emissions may even prove very harmful to the ozone layer of the atmosphere. Low-grade plastic may also swell up in at certain temperatures. It may not be totally fool-proof when the moisture content of the air goes up by a big margin. Actually speaking, the choice of the material for the enclosure really depends on the type of place you are living or working in. If the climatic conditions are not stable and fluctuate a lot, it is the metallic type of enclosure which you should ideally opt for. However, if the climate is what is termed as ‘industrially bad’ with a lot of heat in the air, one should go in for plastic enclosures. Before finalizing your decision, it is wise to go in for a professional opinion to come to a suitable conclusion regarding this matter.
